Frequently asked questions

Questions? Ask Jay.

Meet Chén Jié (Jay), your guide to buying in Shenzhen. Tap any question and Jay will answer it.

It's four simple steps:

  • Tell us what you need. Send us your list, photos or inspiration and a rough budget. We work out which markets and factories to visit.
  • Meet us in Shenzhen. We meet you there, or collect you from Hong Kong, and take you around the showrooms. For a big list, allow a few days.
  • Choose and negotiate. You pick what you like. We translate, compare suppliers, negotiate, and get every order confirmed in writing.
  • We pack and ship. We collect from every supplier and deliver it all to the freight forwarder, who loads one container and ships it to Australia.

Our commission is paid by the sellers, not by you. You pay the price we negotiate together, with nothing added on top by us.

What you do pay for:

  • Your goods, paid directly to each supplier.
  • Getting around on the day. If we meet in Shenzhen, we use Didi (China's Uber), which is very cheap. If you'd like our private van to collect you from Hong Kong and drive you around all day, it's around $400 per day.
  • Shipping, customs and delivery, at actual cost from the freight forwarder.
  • Your own flights, accommodation and meals.

Pretty much anything for a home, a build or a business, including:

  • Furniture for the whole house, indoor and outdoor
  • Building materials: tiles, stone, flooring, doors and windows
  • Kitchens, bathrooms, vanities and tapware
  • Lighting, mirrors, rugs and homewares
  • Garden pieces: pots, pavers, shade and artificial turf
  • Products in bulk to resell in your own business

Some products must meet Australian rules. For example, electrical items need to meet Australian safety standards and building products must be asbestos-free. We'll flag anything that needs extra checks before you buy.

We work best with orders of around half a shipping container or more. That's roughly enough to furnish a family home, or a solid batch of building materials or stock.

For a sense of scale, a standard 20-foot container holds about 30 cubic metres, and a 40-foot container about 60.

Smaller orders can still ship in a shared container (called LCL), but the cost per item goes up, so the trip makes less sense. Not sure how much you'll fill? Send us your list and we'll estimate it.

Fly into Hong Kong (the easiest option from most Australian cities) or straight into Shenzhen. Then choose:

  • Meet us in Shenzhen. Cross the border yourself by MTR or high-speed train, and we'll meet you. We get around by Didi, which costs very little.
  • Take our private van (around $400 per day). We collect you from your Hong Kong hotel, cross the border, drive you around all day and drop you back.

Visas: Australian passport holders can currently visit mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days for business or tourism. This arrangement runs until 31 December 2026, so check the latest rules before you book.

Yes, that's the whole point. Our buyers speak the language, know these markets well and know what things should cost. We compare suppliers, push back on first prices, and negotiate on quantity, finish and delivery.

"If the sellers pay you, whose side are you on?" Yours. We grow through repeat customers and referrals, and that only happens when you get a great deal. There are hundreds of suppliers, so if one won't offer a fair price, we take you to the next. You approve every price before anything is agreed.

You'll see, touch and sit on things in the showroom before you buy, so you're not relying on a photo.

  • We steer you to suppliers with a good track record, and away from the ones without.
  • Specs, materials, colours and finishes are written into each order confirmation.
  • For made-to-order pieces, we can check on progress and send you photos before they're packed.

You pay each supplier directly. We never hold your money. Typically there's:

  • A deposit (often around 30%) to confirm the order or start production
  • The balance before your goods are collected

Payment is usually by bank transfer, or by Alipay or WeChat Pay, which both now accept Australian Visa and Mastercard. Before you pay anything, we make sure there's a written order (a pro-forma invoice) listing exactly what you're getting, the price and the delivery date.

It depends mostly on whether items are in stock or made to order. As a rough guide:

1–2 wksIn-stock items ready to collect
3–6 wksMade-to-order production
2–3 wksAt sea to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane
~1 wkCustoms clearance and delivery

So allow roughly 6 to 12 weeks from your trip to your door. Perth, Adelaide and regional areas can take a little longer.

Tip: most factories close for two to four weeks around Chinese New Year (late January to February), so plan around it.

The freight forwarder and their customs broker handle clearance for you. You pay the actual charges, which usually include:

  • Import duty: often 0% on Chinese goods under the China–Australia Free Trade Agreement, as long as the supplier provides a certificate of origin. We'll ask them for one.
  • GST: 10%, worked out on the value of the goods plus shipping, insurance and any duty.
  • Port, clearance and delivery fees in Australia.

Biosecurity: Australia is strict. Solid timber furniture and some other goods need fumigation or heat treatment, with paperwork to prove it. Goods shipped during stink-bug season (roughly September to April) can face extra checks. Building products must be asbestos-free. We make sure suppliers provide the right certificates so your container clears smoothly.
